Cats on show: The Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold breed of cat is well-known especially for the natural dominant-gene mutation that causes their ear cartilage to have a fold, bringing the ears forwards towards the face. This breed was born in Scotland, from a barn cat called Susie. All Scottish Fold cats share ancestry with Susie”

Since these cats are so unique, loving and loyal, they are very much in demand and therefore expensive.

General Appearance

With their folded ears, very close to the head, these cats are immediately recognizable. The Scottish Fold is a medium-sized cat, with a stocky build and strong muscles. The head is very round, as are the eyes, which are almost button-shaped. Another defining characteristic of the Scottish Fold is the flattened face and nose. They usually have a sweet and inquisitive facial expression. The coat can be long or short and comes in many color variations.

Scottish Folds are very intelligent, curious and sociable. They can adapt to any kind of living situation: they’re relaxed and generally  good-natured. These cats are very affectionate and loyal to their owners, and love being stroked. Even if they are devoted to their owners, they’re not too attached: they can play well with other animals and children. This makes them perfect family pets. They’re known for sleeping on their backs! This means that they feel safe and secure. Another thing about Scottish Folds is that they don’t make a lot of noise and rarely meow.

Health Concerns

This breed generally lives up to 15 years. Due to the fact that they have a natural genetic mutation, there is likelihood that they’ll have bone-related problems late in life. Unfortunately they can also develop kidney disease, joint problems or cardiomyopathy. Thanks to the shape of their ears, they require regular cleaning to avoid build-up which could cause damage.

Scottish Fold cats are unique and have a great personality. For anyone who loves animals and already has pets, a Scottish Fold could be a great addition to the family. They are always friendly and it’s a pleasure to keep them in the house, especially when you’ll see them sitting comfortably just like Buddha.
